Central Government extends Covid insurance scheme to healthcare workers – The New Indian Express
NEW DELHI: The central government announced on Tuesday that the health care insurance scheme
workers performing Covid-19 related functions will be extended for an additional 180 days. Called the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP), this program for around 22.12 lakh workers was due to end on Tuesday. The Department of Health said: “It has been decided to extend the policy to continue to provide the safety net to dependents of health workers who are delegated to care for Covid-19 patients.”
The scheme was launched on March 30, 2020. According to the ministry, it aims to “provide comprehensive personal accident cover of Rs 50 lakh to healthcare providers of Rs 22.12 lakh, including community health workers and private health workers who may have been in direct contact and care of Covid-19 patients and may be at risk of being affected.
So far, 1,905 claims related to health workers who died in the line of duty from Covid-19 have been settled, the ministry said. “In addition, due to the unprecedented situation, private hospital staff / retirees / volunteers / urban local authorities / contract / daily salary / ad-hoc / outsourced staff requisitioned by the states / central hospitals / autonomous central hospitals / states / UT , AIIMS & Institute of National Importance/Hospitals of Central Ministries drafted for the care of Covid-19 patients are also covered by the PMGKP,” the ministry statement added.
