TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Local governments cannot set their own limits on the ractopamine content of pork and beef, as these would conflict with national decrees allowing the import of meat products, the government said central Thursday December 31.

The move comes just a day before the legalization of imported American pork and beef from cattle over 30 months old treated with the drug for the thinness. Several cities and counties, especially those controlled by the opposition Kuomintang Party (KMT), recently drew up rules allowing “zero levels” of ractopamine, effectively banning all meat products containing residues.

The decision by the central government led by the Progressive Democratic Party to lift the ban on January 1 has been hailed as paving the way for a bilateral trade deal with the United States. to NT $ 4 million (US $ 143,000) for those providing misleading information about the origin of meat products.

At a press conference on Thursday, Minister without Portfolio Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成) stressed that food safety standards should be the same nationwide, but said he noticed that 17 local governments had developed different rules from each other and from the national standard. Under new central government rules, restaurants, food stalls, and lunchbox makers must all label their ingredients with the place of origin.

The government will publish daily data on the quantities of pork imported and on pigs slaughtered locally with the aim of informing the public of the latest developments. To address the concerns of pig farmers, the authorities will set up a NT $ 10 billion fund to mitigate the impact of import competition.
