Representatives from Murcia are at the LXI Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf to promote the 18 campsites in the Region with a total of 14,731 places

The Regional Ministry of Presidency, Tourism, Culture and Sports of Murcia promotes the Region in the LXI edition of the “Caravan Salon” fair in Germany.

This fair is one of the major international events in the camping and caravanning sector, with 16 pavilions and more than 650 exhibitors, and is held in the German city of Düsseldorf from August 26th to September 4th.

The Regional Authority, in collaboration with the Association of Campsites of the Region of Murcia, organizes an exhibition during the event where the association’s network of campsites is promoted, as well as the tourist activities of the region and its network additional services. Currently in the Region of Murcia there are up to 18 established campsites with a total of 14,731 pitches.

The director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia (Itrem), Juan Francisco Martínez, pointed out that “this type of tourism is one of the types of accommodation with the greatest seasonality, with an occupancy rate high in winter, guaranteed by Central and Northern European customers”.

In fact, Murcia was the only region in Spain where the number of overnight stays during the winter season, from October 2019 to March 2020, was much higher than that recorded during the summer season, from April 2019 to September 2019, which was 586,186 compared to 539,524.

In this regard, the promotion of camping tourism is one of the lines of action of the Strategic Plan 2022-2032, a tourism and accommodation plan to strengthen sustainability and contact with nature, ecology and family activities.

The director of Itrem underlined that “motorhomes and itinerant tourism are becoming a great social phenomenon throughout Europe”. In this regard, the regional government is updating its camping laws and regulations. This means that, for the first time, motorhome areas and campsites in Murcia will be regulated, implementing a new star categorization equating campsites with hotels and rural pensions, improving their levels of accessibility and ensuring that all will have facilities, entrances, pitches and toilets accessible to people with reduced mobility, as for the other types of accommodation.

How popular is camping in Murcia?

Camping tourism stands out as one of the most resilient after the pandemic. In this regard, the Region of Murcia, in the first half of 2022, achieved the best record for campers in the period from January to June according to available data, 62,109 – 2.5% more than in 2019. These travelers generated 562,185 overnight stays, which represents a 6.1% increase over 2019 and also represents the best data for the January-June period of all-time records.

As for the main markets, in the last year of normality, in 2019, Germany was the main foreign country from which campers in Murcia came, with 267,704 overnight stays, representing 34% of the total. The United Kingdom is the second market with 221,329 overnight stays and a total of 28%. France is the third outbound market for foreign tourism in the Region with 120,883 overnight stays, which represents a share of 15%.
